Deaf Architecture Front

Deaf Architecture Front is bridging the deaf design gap. Through engagement, collaboration and celebration, our mission is to make the deaf community heard.

There are less than 10 Deaf qualified architects in the UK

Deaf Architecture Front is here to change that

Deaf Architecture Front was set up by Chris Laing in 2023

Our aim is to support other deaf people who want to work in– and engage with – architecture. As a group of activists, advocates, changemakers and collaborators, we’re reshaping the profession to make the deaf community heard.
Our work
Our services

Advocacy

We’re working for better inclusion in architecture for the Deaf community through our advocacy and campaigning work.

Resources

We’re creating open-source resources and collecting data so future Deaf architects will be better informed and fully supported. We’re also evolving BSL so that we can communicate architecture on our own terms.

Consultancy

We’re using our design expertise to create Deaf space, advising hearing colleagues on how to improve accessibility.

Community

We’re building a network of Deaf architects, allies, supporters and partners because there’s strength in numbers. We’re bringing that community together at accessible workshops, events and tours.
“It was wonderful to see the whole team learning and working together to imagine clear, tangible and achievable ways to make the festival more inclusive by removing barriers for and with the Deaf community.”
